Troubleshooting
Find the log
VS Code — open the Output panel and choose a channel:
| Channel | Holds |
|---|---|
| Modex | the extension itself: startup, models, libraries, agents |
| Modex Simulation | compiler and simulator output — also Modex: Show Simulation Output |
| Modex AgenticEMT | the PSCAD package — also Modex: Show AgenticEMT Log |
Modex Desktop — the logs are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Modex\modex-desktop: runtime.log (with the previous one as runtime.log.1) and diagnostics.jsonl. If Desktop fails to start, the error dialog ends with the path of the log to send.
File → Export Diagnostics Bundle in Desktop packs a .zip for one model: open the .mo the problem is about first, then describe the steps that reproduce it.
Common problems
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
Simulate says OpenModelica (omc) was not found | install OpenModelica or point Modex at it — Simulation engines |
| Modex says the Modelica Standard Library was not found | install it when Modex offers to, or from Settings → Libraries |
A .pscx shows a page instead of the canvas | the page title says why — PSCAD projects |
| PSCAD components are labelled placeholders | PSCAD is not installed on this machine, or its master library is elsewhere — PSCAD projects |
| Your agent cannot connect to Modex | open a VS Code window with Modex, or start Desktop once after installing it; after an update, reconnect from Modex's settings — Claude Code, Codex & MCP |
| Your agent cannot find its project in Modex | in VS Code, open the agent's project folder; Desktop lets the agent work in its own folder — Claude Code, Codex & MCP |
| Modex asks for an update before connecting | update Modex, then reconnect your client from Modex's settings |
| Claude Desktop does not show Modex after connecting it | restart Claude; for the Windows Store app, open Claude once before enabling its switch under Settings → MCP |
| Claude Code does not display a plugin canvas | its current CLI does not expose that canvas; interactive canvases are available in Claude Desktop |
| Windows says Windows protected your PC | the Desktop installer is not code-signed yet — verify it, then run it |
| Antivirus quarantined the Desktop installer | restore it only if its SHA-256 matches the downloads page |
| You want a model back the way it was before an edit, an agent turn or another program's change | File → Revert to… in Desktop — Saving |
| Desktop says it couldn't check for updates | a network problem, not a sign that you are up to date; try Help → About Modex → Check for Updates later |
Report a problem
Open an issue at github.com/modexai-io/modex-feedback, ask on Discord, or email support@modexai.io. Include:
- the Modex version (VS Code: the Extensions view; Desktop: Help → About Modex) and your operating system;
- for simulation problems, the output of
omc --version; - what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead;
- the log from the channel or file above;
- for a
.pscx, the AgenticEMT version and the title of the page the tab showed.
Logs can contain file and model names from your workspace. Read them before you post them publicly; email works when they should not be public.
