Modex Desktop

Modex Desktop is a standalone app with the same editors as the VS Code extension. It is a public preview for Windows x64. There is no macOS or Linux build yet; on those systems, use the VS Code extension.

Download and verify

Get the installer from the downloads page. Before you run it, compare its SHA-256 with the hash printed on that page:

powershell
certutil -hashfile Modex-Desktop-<version>-x64.exe SHA256

If the hash differs, delete the file without running it.

Install

The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows Windows protected your PC with an unknown publisher. Once the hash matches, choose More info → Run anyway. Some antivirus products may flag this unsigned installer; restore a quarantined file only after its hash matches. We will never ask you to disable Windows Defender.

The installer is per-user and lets you choose the folder. The installed app takes about 1.4 GB, before optional compilers and toolchains.

First run

Open your project with File → Open Folder…. File → Open Recent returns to folders you used before. The gear icon at the right of the top bar opens Settings.

Desktop includes the Modelica Standard Library. Simulation needs OpenModelica, which Desktop can install for you, or your own licensed Dymola (beta) — see Simulation engines.

For PSCAD .pscx projects, choose Install AgenticEMT when prompted — see PSCAD projects.

Saving

Desktop saves your edits automatically. If saving fails or a file changes elsewhere, Modex shows a message so you can resolve it.

Ctrl+S (File → Save) takes a checkpoint instead: it marks this version so you can come back to it. File → Revert to… restores an earlier version; Create checkpoint… in that list lets you name one. Reverting also keeps the version it replaces, so you can undo a revert.

Updates

Desktop checks modexai.io for a newer version at most once a day. When there is one, a banner offers Download, which opens the downloads page in your browser; Desktop never installs an update by itself. Both controls are in Help → About Modex: Check for updates automatically and Check for Updates.

Privacy

Anonymous usage data is on by default. Switch it off from Help → About Modex → Privacy. The privacy page lists what is sent, and how to remove everything Desktop stores.

Your project files stay in the folder you opened. Uninstalling removes the program and keeps your files and settings.

Connected coding agents and background work

Use Settings → MCP to connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex — see Connect your coding agent. The built-in assistant is ready to use without these connections.

To keep simulations and connected agents working after closing the window, enable Settings → Appearance → Window → Keep running in background. The notification-area icon reopens Modex or quits it.

With background mode off, closing Modex asks before stopping a simulation or analysis. Quit from the notification-area icon stops Modex and its connected work.
